Smart solar streetlights installed ahead of World Cup
Qatar makes bold claim to be fully carbon neutral for 2022 World Cup
As Qatar prepares to host the World Cup, the country has put its green agenda at the forefront of its preparations. In the latest push, the country has installed 350 self-powered solar streetlights in several locations in Doha, mainly in parking lots and on paths around busy areas.
Known as SIOSUN, the solar lights were developed and installed by SIOSUN SMART, based in Shenzhen, China, and have been successfully deployed in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Egypt and other country regions.
In a post about the installation, SIOSUN highlighted the importance of the World Cup as an opportunity for Qatar to showcase its drive for renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.
The country had previously made the ambitious claim that this year's event would be the first carbon neutral World Cup, offsetting any remaining emissions from the event through the use of renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure, as well as investing in green projects.
In addition to the event, smart lighting is becoming an increasingly popular feature of smart city infrastructure, with the advantage of being easy to install and able to operate completely independent of the grid.
"Our future would be bleak without these alternatives, and we are pleased to contribute to building sustainable smart cities," said MICHELL HU, CEO of SIOSUN. "Demand for our products is growing, and we are planning to take advantage of the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act incentives to expand our manufacturing facilities in Europe and the U.S."
